Lightning Ridge is located in north-western New South Wales near the  border of Queensland and has a population of around 2,500, most of whom are troglodytes in the sense that they live in cave-like dwellings underground due to the extreme temperatures summer, sometimes as high as 47c. Below ground it’s a cool and constant 22 degrees.

Lightning Ridge has the largest known deposits of black opals in the world. Its name reputedly originates from the death of a shepherd, his dog and his flock of hundreds of sheep killed by a mighty bolt lightning.
